The Labor Territory Government has teamed up with Barkly Regional Council Mayor Jeffrey McLaughlin to start an immediate working group to save the Tennant Creek Show. After news hit of the 2023 Show’s cancellation yesterday evening, Chief Minister Natasha Fyles was alerted to the troubles behind the Tennant and Districts Show Society Committee’s decision. The working group met today to develop a fast-action plan to ensure the Show goes ahead. Mayor Jeffrey said the NT Government has already committed an initial $10,000 to address infrastructure issues at Jubilee Park, while the working group is considering alternative sites. “Bells Amusements has confirmed its keen to bring the sideshow alley provided there is a suitable site available,” he said. “The working group will meet with Bells Amusements in Tennant Creek on Monday to finalise plans, with current planning to hold the show from Thursday 13 July from 4pm to late and Friday 14 July from 10am to 4pm. “I really want to thank Chief Minister Natasha Fyles and the NT Government for its support to deliver the Show – it’s such a great event and it helps bring the community together.” One of the reasons also for the cancellation was a volunteer shortage and volunteer burnout from stalwart locals. Mayor Jeffrey urged if you’re interested in volunteering or having a stall, please register your interest by emailing barkly.cmc@nt.gov.au The working group will provide regular updates.
