New bail laws increase pressures in ‘broken system’
Record high prisoner numbers have forced a government to convert a purpose-built police watch house into a temporary jail as new bail laws come into effect. The Palmerston watch house, north of Darwin, will be handed over to the Department of Corrections to house an overflow of prisoners for the "foreseeable future," according to the territory's chief minister. In October the Country Liberal Party repealed bail legislation to ensure anyone committing "serious crime" would face jail time. Those laws came into effect on Monday when seven bail applications made in the courts on the same day were denied or referred…
‘Lives at risk’ as Telstra cuts remote phone link
Lives are at risk in remote Northern Territory communities because of a week-long phone network shutdown that began without warning and left outstation health services without communications, a health chief has warned. The Ampilatwatja community, northeast of Alice Springs, is without mobile connection after Telstra shut down its 3G network on Saturday and temporarily turned off 4G connectivity until this Friday to carry out upgrades. The Ampilatwatja Health Centre Aboriginal Corporation, which delivers primary health care, including ambulance services, in the community, is relying on its satellite service. Croc culling not the answer for stopping attacks: study
Widespread saltwater crocodile culling is a less effective way to reduce attacks than community awareness and crocodile management, a study has found. There were 76 crocodile attacks on people in the Northern Territory between 1979 and 2022, with 30 per cent fatal. In Queensland, the were 48 attacks between December 1985 and April 2024, with 15 fatal. The rate of attacks in the NT stabilised after 2008, according to research by Charles Darwin University, despite crocodile density and human population continuing to rise, with a 10 per cent decrease in the frequency of incidents over the following decade. Ecologist Cameron…
Mparntwian “Portal” Proposal to Connect Globally
A small team of innovators in Mparntwe/Alice Springs are exploring an ambitious initiative to integrate the town into a global network designed to foster peace, love, and unity. Drawing from a concept that blends technology with art, the group is seeking community feedback to build a "Portal," a sculpture that connects our town with identical installations around the world. The portal proposed is not only a piece of technology art but also serves as a live gateway, offering a window to various locales across the globe. These sculptures enable individuals to encounter life as it unfolds in different towns and…
