Urgent bail reform after store owner’s fatal stabbing
A store owner's fatal stabbing has triggered urgent reforms, with a political leader vowing to adopt Australia's toughest bail laws. The Northern Territory parliament will reconvene on Wednesday to pass bail legislation after a teenager was arrested following the stabbing. The 18-year-old, who was out on bail, handed himself in after the death of 71-year-old store owner Linford Feick in Darwin. The teenager - who turned 18 just days ago - is in custody but has not been charged. Chief Minister Lia Finocchiaro said urgent action was required after the tragedy occurred barely two years following Declan Laverty's death. NT…

Four on trial over teen’s alleged ‘revenge’ murder
A Darwin man's "tragic death" was an act of revenge after an altercation at a party earlier that night, a jury in a murder trial has been told. Melissa Clancy, 39, her 20-year-old daughter Madison Butler, Dechlan Wurramarra, 22, and a teenager - who cannot be named for legal reasons - have pleaded not guilty to his murder. Mr Alley's mother Chelsea Miller wiped tears from her cheek as prosecutors opened…
Seven women killed, time to ‘wake up’, cops say
Northern Territory police are pleading with the community to "wake up" to an unfolding epidemic of domestic violence as investigations continue into seven deaths in less than five months. The latest death of a woman allegedly killed by her partner prompted an appeal on Tuesday by the Territory's police Assistant Commissioner Travis Wurst: "this has to stop". "The tragedy is mounting, and that tragedy is one that the Northern Territory cannot ignore - seven matters are being investigated by the Northern Territory police as domestic homicides since 1 June of this year," he said. "The Northern Territory cannot accept one…

Crystal Love, the matriarch of Tiwi sistergirls, said she had lost part of herself when her daughter was killed on Monday. The victim's name is not being used for cultural reasons. "We are living in a world that is all messed up ... she was good person, a kind…

The startling statistics also reveal that of the 476 Indigenous and Torres Strait Islander women murdered between July 1989 and June 2023, almost three-quarters were killed by their current or former intimate partner. The report used 34 years of homicide data, relating to cases legally defined as murder or…
